It’s only September but we are going to take a look at some of the top A/AA teams and what they have returning.  This article is not going to touch weight classes, as it is too early to think about cutting weight.  The projections are based on returning strength from the traditional state tournament.  One can easily look to see what points a team has returning.  Right now, decoding dual team line-ups and match-ups is going to be next to impossible.  Many thanks to all the coaches that responded with team information and updates on their squad.

PIGEON FORGE TIGERS (106.0 Points Returning)

Head Coach – Greg Foreman (19h Season)

Assistant Coaches – Mitchell Breeden, Robbie Satterfield

Let’s start with last year’s Dual and Traditional Team Champions.  They don’t have the most points coming back but to be the man, you’ve got to beat the man.  Coach Foreman is one of the best coaches in the state and will do everything in his power to get the Tigers on top in 2020.  In the State Duals, Pigeon Forge topped Nolensville 59-18.  In the traditional state tournament, they topped Signal Mountain 166.0 to 148.5.  They return a strong core of wrestlers led by 2019 freshman state champion Colby Dalon (10).  Pigeon Forge is no stranger to the state finals in other weight classes as Josh Parton (10) and Joseph Skidmore (12) have recorded runner-up finishes.  Those three finalists and sophomore Garrett Foreman (10) – 3rd in 2019 are a strong young core that will keep Pigeon Forge in the hunt for the next few years.  Two Tigers lost in the blood round in 2019 and hunt for state medals in 2020 – Jason Heth (12) and Mustafi Algoraui (11).  Rounding out Coach Foreman’s squad are state qualifiers Hunter Gentry (10), Noah Dyer (10), and Ethan Sutton (11).  Ethan wrestled in this summer’s TNUSA state tournament placing 3rd at 195 in freestyle and 4th in Greco.  Garrett Foreman also placed 3rd in Greco.  Overall, the Tigers return 106.0 points from the state tournament, which puts them in the top three with Hixson and Signal Mountain.

SIGNAL MOUNTAIN EAGLES (116.0 Returning)

Head Coach – Joe Jellison (8th season)

Assistant Coaches – Casey Thompson

Signal Mountain, from Region 3, returns more points (116.0) from the individual state tournament than any other squad.  Pair that with a trip to the state duals semi-finals and you have a tough squad returning to the mat in 2020.  Leading the squad is two-time state champion and 2018 OW Daniel Uhorchuk (11).  Daniel had a busy summer – winning TNUSA Freestyle and Greco state championships.  The team includes 4 more state medalists – Caleb Uhorchuk (9) who was 2nd at 106, Kale Albritton (11) who was 5th at 126, Kevin Muschel (11) – 2nd at 138, and Preston Worley – 2nd at 152.  Rounding out the returning squad are state qualifiers Mason Hilke(12), who lost in the blood round in 2019, and Noah Shriner (10).

HIXSON WILDCATS (105.5 Points Returning)

Head Coach – Garrick Hall (15th season)

Assistant Coaches – Jonathan Durham, Kristie McElhaney, Jill Moses, Ulric Winesburgh, and Todd Worley

Hixson looks to be in a strong position to return to the top spot in 2020.  Coach Hall has led teams to a pair of state titles in 2009 and 2010 in state duals championships and in 2014 with a traditional state title.  This Region 2 squad has 105.5 points returning which puts the Wildcats on par with Pigeon Forge (106.0) and Signal Mountain (116.0).  Hixson does lead the way with 10 returning state qualifiers so they will be a deep, experienced squad.  They are led by state champion Trever Lewis (11).  Trevor locked up last year’s state championship with an 8-7 decision over Josh Parton (10) of Pigeon Forge.  The other finalist for Hixson are Devotis McCurdy (12) – 2nd at 285.  McCurdy lost a 1-0 decision in the state finals in 2019.  He will be looking for that next spot up in 2020.  The depth of this squad is also shown by having four other returning medalists – Connor Leffew (11) – 5th at 106, Charles Burton (12) – 6th at 126, Jeremiah Shackleford (12) – 5th at 132, and Parrish Pacetti (11) – 5th at 220.  Hixson had two wrestlers lose in the blood round last year – Caleb Miller (11) and Kaleb Mayes (11).  You can expect to see those wrestlers aiming for medals in 2020.  Rounding out the squad are state qualifiers Kobie Smith (11) and Logan Woodall (10).

ELIZABETHTON CYCLONES (73.0 Points Returning)

Head Coach – Travis Pennell (3rd season)

Assistant Coaches – Eddie Morrell

Elizabethton returns a strong squad with the 4th most points back for 2020.  The squad’s leader is Jonathan Morton (11).  Jonathan was last year’s 195 pound state champion with a 5:41 pin over Noah Hill (11) of Forrest.  State medalists round out the rest of this veteran squad.  Hunter Morrell (12) – 2nd at 113, Andrew Fontanez (12) – 6th at 132, and Joseph Kechter (12) – 5th at 285.  Other wrestlers expected to contribute to the team’s success are state qualifiers Holden Roaten (10) Cory Lawson (12, in 2018) and Heath Owens (12).  The Cyclones had a strong finish in this summer’s TNUSA State Championships with a 10th place finish in Greco and Freestyle.  Their best results came in Greco with Morrell winning the state championship.  The team had good results in freestyle with Morton, Morrell and Kechter all placing 2nd.  One name to watch is Isaiah King (10).  King missed out on qualifying for state but had a record of 22-10.

HARPETH INDIANS (72.0 Points Returning)

Head Coach – Ricky Woods

Harpeth enters 2020 with a solid squad and the most points coming out of Region 4.  The Indians have five state qualifiers returning and are led by 2019 state champion Ty Holland (12).  Holland won state with an 8-5 decision over Caleb Uhorchuk of Signal Moutain.  This strong tournament squad lists three other state medalists – Jackson Whitlow (12) – 5th at 113, Rolando Lucio (12) – 3rd at 126, Matthew Pack (11) – 5th at 138.  The squad is rounded out by state qualifier Cooper Edwards (10).

FORREST ROCKETS (71.0 Points Returning)

Head Coach – Jason Hill

Forrest, Region 3, returns a strong tournament squad that features two state finalists in Noah Hill (11) and Nick McClendon (12).  McClendon finished 2019 undefeated and won his state title 7-3 over Isaiah Brooks of Gibbs.  Noah Hill’s trip to the finals was an 8-8 match late in the third period before being pinned by Morton (12) of Elizabethton with 19 seconds left.  The Rockets have one other medalist returning – Cole Geeting (11) – 5th at 152.  One of their wrestlers to watch is Braiden Vanderploeg (10).  Braiden lost in the blood round in 2019.  You can be sure that he will be working to make that next step up to the medal rounds in 2020.  Other returning state qualifiers are Forest Ozburn (10) and Carson Blackwell (12).

FAIRVIEW YELLOWJACKETS (62.0 Points Returning)

Head Coach – James Derrick
