VHSL Roundup: Union’s Potter wins fourth state wrestling title

SALEM — Union’s Thomas Potter became part of a select group of 33 wrestlers to win four VHSL individual titles on Saturday at the Salem Civic Center as he won a 4-2 decision over Wise Central’s Avery Hall for the crown at 165.

It was also Potter’s fourth different weight class in four years — the 17th wrestler to accomplish the feat in state history. Potter is also the second four-time state champ from Wise County, joining J.I. Burton’s Colby Dean.

The Warriors finished third as a team with 144 points while Union was fifth with 108.5 in Class 2. The top six in each weight class earned all-state honors.

The Warriors got a gold medal out of Brayden Owsley (12) as he won a 3-1 decision over Peyton Dean of Strasburg.

Other local notables in Class 2 included Union’s Canaan Spears (third, 126), Ean Schenck (third, 106) and Brent Lovell (second, 285).

Lee High’s Eli Penix (fifth, 132) and John Battle’s Noah Sills (second, 215) were the other two Mountain 7 placers.

In Class 1, Grundy took home a 27th state championship by racking up 312 points while runner-up Grayson County tallied 142. The Golden Wave had nine individual champions.

Castlewood’s Slade Castle took home gold at 138 with a 3-2 decision over Rural Retreat’s Chaz Penwright, which was a rematch of the Region 1D finals. Nick Ward of Eastside placed fifth at 138 after winning his consolation match over Franklin’s Antuwah Warren with a pin (4:41).

Eastside’s Dayton Stanley (fifth, 175), Steve Moore (fifth, 157) and Mason McCoy (sixth, 150) also had solid tournaments.
