D-B wrestling wins Section 1 title, sends 10 to state

MORRISTOWN — Dobyns-Bennett not only crowned four Section 1 individual champions, but six other Tribe wrestlers will join their teammates at the TSSAA individual championships.

Oh, and the Indians won the team title as well.

Mason Jakob (38-3) won the 120-pound championship, winning a 9-1 major decision over Science Hill’s Chase Smalling (46-2).

Derek Winseman (35-11) defeated Knoxville Halls’ David Cook 16-9 for the 126-pound title, with Jimmy Taylor (27-5) pinning Morristown West’s Tavion Rudolph for the 175-pound championship. Garrett Crowder (40-4) pinned Maryville’s Bryce Goins in just 1:10 to claim the 215-pound crown.

Bryson Church (106) and Jake Dempsey (190) both reached the sectional final before finishing runner-up. Kennedy Watterson (132), Drew Vetter (150) and Austin Conners (157) all finished third, with Gavin Crowder (165) taking fourth to punch their tickets.

As a team, D-B accumulated 177.5 points, edging second-place Halls (173).

In addition to Smalling, Arthur Silva also took second place at 150 pounds for Science Hill.

Andrew Kneisley (144) placed third while Saxon Mattison (106), Bryson Wilhjelm (132) and Haiden Cox (285) each finished fourth to qualify for Franklin.

West Ridge also had three individuals advance, led by Jacob Belcher’s runner-up finish at 157 pounds. Brayden Ray (175) and Brady Chatman (138) placed third and fourth respectively.

Science Hill girls take runner-up at Region 1 tourney

Several locals fared well and punched their tickets to the state tournament in Friday’s Region 1 girls tournament at Science Hill.

The Lady Hilltoppers were second in the team standings with 131.5 points as Gibbs took the team title (177).

The top four in each weight class advanced to the state.

Sawyer Ward claimed gold for Science Hill at 152 with a 7-3 decision over Krickett Jones of Karns in the finals. Ward improved her record to 39-1 on the season.

Science Hill’s Kaeli Cross was runner-up in her 100-pound weight class, falling to Cora Finstead (Gibbs) in the finals. David Crockett’s Makayla Ryans also will go to the state as she finished third at 100 pounds.

Other Science Hill qualifiers were Averie Mottern (third, 107), Alex Costello (second, 126), Dakota Ward (second, 138) and Briley Costello (third, 165).

The other local qualifiers were Greeneville’s Jenna Baines (second, 107), Crockett’s Kierstyn Poyner (fourth, 114), Emily Brown (third, 132), Elizabethton’s Sadie Kellerman (third, 120), Sullivan East’s Brinlee Crosby (fourth, 138), West Greene’s Megan Hinkle (third, 145) and Macy Greenlee (first, 235), Chuckey-Doak’s Alexia Innis (fourth, 165) and Daniel Boone’s Sallie Lundy (fourth, 185).

TSSAA CLASS A SECTIONAL

KNOXVILLE — Three David Crockett wrestlers finished runner-up in their respective weight classes in Saturday’s Class A Section 1 championships.

Deter Thompson (38-2) reached the 106-pound final, Jake Ferrell (41-2) took second at 138 and Alex Ingle (23-16) likewise at 190.

Felix Duncan (157), Colton Ferrell (175) and Brayden Vance (285) all finished third, and fourth-place Nolan Rankin (120) will also join them at the TSSAA state championships.

Sullivan East had five state qualifiers, with third-place finishes from Owen Griffith (120) and Bentley Keys (132). Trysten Walden (113), Donovan Smithpeters (150) and Marshall Jones (190) all took fourth.

Two-time state champion Carson Dupill (26-4) led Greeneville by winning the 126-pound championship. Zac Chrisman (215) took second, while Gabriel Oakley (126) and Derrick Day (138) placed third. Angus Herrell (157) and Hayden Moore (165) ended up fourth.

Tennessee High’s Max Minor (132) and Elijah Moore (150) both placed second, and Kade Bible (215) fourth to qualify.

As a team, David Crockett finished third with 100 points, behind Pigeon Forge (128) and Seymour (117).
